UQconnect Wireless Network on-campus is available to UQ students.

You may connect to the UQ Wireless Network using your own laptop or compatible mobile device, or you may borrow a laptop.

To use your own laptop on the UQ Wireless Network you need:

  1. Laptop computer or a compatible mobile device.
  2. A correctly installed Wireless LAN (WLAN) adapter that adheres to either the IEEE 802.11g or 802.11b standard.  If you do not have a Wireless LAN (WLAN) adapter, you can connect to the network with a LAN cable. Instructions for connecting via a LAN cable can be found here.
  3. A web browser (eg. Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) with correct proxy setup.
  4. A current student UQ Sign In Username and Password.
  5. VPN Client installed (optional). Refer to UQconnect's VPN (Virtual Private Network) information page.

TIP : Some laptops have a physical switch to turn the wireless connection on and off. Other laptops use a designated keyboard Function key to toggle the wireless connection on and off. Be sure to check this if you have trouble connecting the first time!

Note: If you do not own your own laptop, there are Student Laptop Loans available.

Wireless Network Adapters
Due to the multitude of brands on the market, UQconnect can only officially support a limited number of them. Below is a list of models that have been thoroughly tested and found not only to work, but also are simple to install and configure on a variety of devices:

  1. PCMCIA
    Netgear WG511 and WG511T
    Cisco Aironet 350 Series
    Nortel eMobility
  2. USB
  3. Compact Flash - Netgear MA711
  4. SD Card - Sandisk WiFi Cards
  5. Other - Apple Airport Card, which comes built-in to Apple's range of laptops
Netgear cards are available for purchase from the ITS Service Centre at St Lucia campus. Netgear USB wireless adaptors are available for library loan from the Ask I.T. Help Desk ( St Lucia campus).

The default settings for most adapters are all that is needed to connect, however for those that require further configuration, the following settings will be useful:

SSID or ESSID UQconnect (case sensitive)
WEP encryption Off or Disabled
Channel Selection Auto
802.1X Authentication Off or Disabled
Data Rate Auto

VPN - Virtual Private Network
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows you to create a secure connection to a private network (such as the UQnet, which is the University's network) over public access lines.

If you need to access The University of Queensland network and you are situated off-campus, then VPN is the only way to have full access to online resources.

Refer to UQconnect's VPN (Virtual Private Network) page for more information.

Connecting to the Wireless Network in the Toowoomba and Rockhampton Hospitals
In order to connect to the Wireless Network in Toowomba and Rockhampton Hospitals, you need to:

  1. Set up your laptop to connect to the UQ Wireless Network by following the instructions on the UQConnect Wireless - Getting Started page, or refer to the Ask I.T. Wireless Guide online.
  2. Install the VPN Client on your laptop. Refer to UQconnect's VPN (Virtual Private Network) information page.
Please note there are no VPN clients as yet for PDA devices.

Accessing External Websites
You are able to browse most UQ websites without network authentication when using the UQconnect Wireless Network. These include the UQ homepage, my.UQ and mySI-net, along with the University Library.

Note: While traffic from UQ sites is free, some online teaching modules (such as Blackboard) may source their content externally. This traffic may count against your download quota.

  1. If you request an external web page, such http://www.google.com.au, you will be re-directed to the UQconnect Wireless Network Sign In page.
  2. In order to proceed beyond this point, you will need to enter your UQ Sign In Username and Password. These are securely transmitted via wireless in the same way Internet banking details are sent across the Internet. Look for the padlock icon at the bottom of your browser window.
  3. You can confirm the details of the Sign In page by double-clicking the padlock icon. This is your guarantee that you are logging on to the legitimate UQconnect Wireless Network and that no one is able to see your details being submitted.
  4. Once you have successfully authenticated to the network, you will be forwarded to the UQ Login Pool Selection page to choose how you would like your external traffic accounted. For more details about TMIAS, see the Traffic Management page.
  5. A small pop-up window (with a black background) should also appear that provides you with a way to log out of the network manually. This may be closed if desired, in which case you will be automatically logged out of the network approximately five minutes after you turn your wireless device off. Note that you may have to adjust your pop-up blocker settings (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc...) for this window to appear.
  6. Once you have selected your preferred quota pool by clicking the appropriate 'USE' button, you will be sent to the web site you requested and are free to browse the Internet for the remainder of your web session or until you manually log out.
  7. Depending on your browser security settings you may also receive a notification that you are leaving the secure Traffic Management page and that any pages you visit are not necessarily encrypted. Click "Yes" to continue.

Will my student download quota be charged when I access the internet from the UQconnect Wireless network?

IMPORTANT NOTE: To download is to receive data from a remote system, such as a website, FTP server , or other similar systems. Just by opening up and browsing internet web pages, you are downloading data.

Pages in the uq.edu.au domain (that is, pages that have an address ending in uq.edu.au, including askit.uq.edu.au, for example) can be viewed unconditionally, without being charged to your download quota.

However, Web or FTP downloads using a login session on the student.uq.edu.au server and downloads from registered residential college networks will be charged against your download quota.

Additionally, any traffic sourced from outside of the uq.edu.au domain
(eg. www.google.com.au) will be tied to your student internet download quota.

Student download quota is currently set at 400MB per month. You can check how close you are to your quota limit by logging on to my.UQ and viewing the myQuota area. If you reach your quota, you will be unable to access sites beyond the uq.edu.au domain. However, it is possible to purchase more quota from UQconnect .

To check if a site will count against your download quota, click on the “Unmetered Site Lookup” link on http://login.uq.edu.au
For detailed information about Student Download Quota, refer to UQconnect's web page .

Are there any rules I need to follow when connected to the UQconnect Wireless network?
All access to the University network is subject to the University's Internet Code of Practice. All users must read and comply with this document. Pay particular attention to "Section 9: Illicit material", "Section 10: Copyright" and "Section 12: Network Sharing".

Printing
Printing to University of Queensland Library branch printers is available from laptops, home or offices.
Please note - This service is not available to the UQ Library Ipswich branch. To print at Ipswich you need to save your data onto a CD, portable USB drive or email the document to your student email address, then open the file on a library workstation connected to a printer, and send it to a network printer. Instructions on how to print from computers located in library branches are available on the printing help pages.
