Where can you connect to the UQ Library LAN?

LAN connection is available to UQ students via Ethernet network ports (RJ45 plug) available in most libraries. See the friendly staff at the Ask I.T. Help Desk for further information.

What do you need to use the UQ Library LAN?
To access the Library Network you need a:
  1. Laptop computer
Laptops are also available for loan to students from the following University of Queensland Libraries, however conditions apply:
    • St Lucia Campus - Duhig Building
    • St Lucia Campus - Biological Sciences Library
    • St Lucia Campus - Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library
    • Ipswich Campus - Library Building 8
    • Gatton Campus - Library Building 102
  2. Network card, configured to automatically get an IP address from a DHCP server
  3. Network cable (Network cables can be borrowed from the St Lucia and Ipswich Ask I.T. Desks and from the Biological Sciences Library . Cables can also be purchased from UQconnect or from most computer hardware stores. University requirements are for a minimum of a 1m CAT5 twisted-pair cable)
  4. Web browser (eg. Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) with correct proxy setup
  5. Current student UQ Sign In Username and Password
NOTE: You cannot use your dial-up Modem to connect to the network outlets in UQ Library buildings because you are not using a Dialup connection to access the Internet. You are connecting to a LAN (Local Area Network) , which allows you to access the Internet through the library's WWW proxy-server.

Although they use a similar type of cable plug as your modem, the network outlets are very different from telephone sockets and could possibly cause permanent damage to your modem if you attempt to use it on them.

Proxy Setup Guide
Who needs to setup proxies?

  • UQ Students using their FREE internet dialup access.
  • UQ Staff using a departmental dialup or UQ DSL Variable access.
  • Any one wanting to access the internet in UQ lecture theatres (requires an internet account).
  • Any one wanting to access the internet from the UQ LAN or wireless network, and from some labs and libraries (please consult the local IT support staff for confirmation).
Internet Explorer
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. From the Menu bar select "Tools"
  3. Select "Internet Options"
  4. Click the "Connections" tab
  5. Click the [LAN Settings] button to continue
  6. Ensure that all of the checkboxes are unchecked

Network Settings Guide
Windows XP /2000
  1. From Control Panel, open "Network Connections".
  2. Right-click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties".
  3. Click on the “General” tab, select the Internet TCP/IP protocol, and click the [Properties] button.
  4. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have a static IP address (numbered) and wish to use this again, make a note of the details, as these will be deleted by choosing to obtain an automatic IP address.
  5. Click [OK] to apply and close.
Mac OS X
Connection to the UQ Library LAN via Mac OS X should be automatic.
Try this first:
  1. Select Apple Menu > Location > Automatic
  2. Launch your browser and go to an external site such as www.google.com.au
  3. If you are prompted for “proxy authentication”, enter your student login and password

If the website loads, you’re connected.
If the website doesn’t load, there are a few extra settings to enter:

  4. Go to Apple Menu > Location > Network Preferences
  5. Location: should say Automatic
  6. Show: should be set to Built-in Ethernet
  7. In the TCP/IP tab, check that Configure: is set to Using DHCP. Click Apply Now.

IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router should show greyed-out numbers with a note “Provided by DHCP Server”. If they don’t, the laptop isn’t detecting the network, so check your cables. If you are still unable to connect, ask the staff at the Ask I.T. Desk for further assistance.

Printing
In University of Queensland Libraries you will not be able to print directly from your laptop.

To print you need to save your data onto a floppy disk or portable USB drive, then open the file on a library workstation connected to a printer, and send it to print. An alternative is to email the file to yourself, open it on a library workstation connected to a printer, and send it to print.

Will my student download quota be charged when I access the internet from the UQ Library LAN?

IMPORTANT NOTE:
To download is to receive data from a remote system, such as a website, FTP server, or other similar systems. Just by opening up and browsing internet web pages, you are downloading data.

Pages in the uq.edu.au domain (that is, pages that have an address ending in uq.edu.au, including askit.uq.edu.au, for example) can be viewed unconditionally, without being charged to your download quota.

NOTE: While traffic from UQ sites is free, some online teaching modules (such as Blackboard) may source their content externally. This traffic may count against your download quota.

However, Web or FTP downloads using a login session on the student.uq.edu.au server will be charged against your download quota.

Additionally, any traffic sourced from outside of the uq.edu.au domain
(eg. www.google.com.au) will be tied to your student internet download quota.

Student download quota is currently set at 200MB per month. You can check how close you are to your quota by logging on to my.UQ and viewing the myQuota area. If you reach your quota, you will be unable to access sites beyond the uq.edu.au domain. However, it is possible to purchase more quota from the cashier at UQconnect. You can also apply for extra quota online at their website.

To check if a site will count against your download quota, click on the “Unmetered Site Lookup” link on http://login.uq.edu.au
NOTE: Accessing the Internet using a library computer does not currently affect your download quota. Library computers are currently download quota free to help you conduct research for your studies. But you are still required to authenticate with your UQ Sign In username and password.

For detailed information about Student Download Quota, refer to UQconnect’s web page.

Are there any rules I need to follow when connected to the UQ Library LAN?
All access to the University network is subject to the University's Internet Code of Practice . All users must read and comply with this document. Pay particular attention to "Section 9: Illicit material", "Section 10: Copyright" and "Section 12: Network Sharing".
