Note: The following information applies to all UQ campuses except Ipswich. Students studying at Ipswich should click on the link above for information relating to printing at UQ Ipswich campus.

How are Printers set up in the Library?

All printing is done via network printing. When you send a print command from any application in a Library Branch, your workstation will print to the default (closest) network printer located in that Branch.

Printing in the Library can be done through three easy steps:

  1. Get printing credits and workstation ID
  2. Send the print job to the network printer
  3. Collect the print job from the network printer

Step 1: What's needed for printing?

  1. You need a student ID card or UNICARD print/copy card to copy or print. To print or copy at the Library, you must purchase credit for your account.

  2. You will need to identify the workstation that you are currently working on. The workstation can be identified through the six digit ID number (located on the sticker on the lower left hand corner of the LCD monitor).
Obtaining print copy card and credits

To use library photocopiers and printers you can use your student ID card or buy a Unicard print/copycard to purchase print/copy credit. You can buy a Unicard print/copy card for $2.00 from automatic card dispensing machines located in branch libraries. Please note that Unicardprint/copy cards are not supplied with printing credit.

Credit can be added to your account at an automatic dispensing machine. The cost of printing is 12 cents (including GST) per page for black and white copies. Colour copies are more expensive.

Students should write their name and student number on the back of their card so that they can be returned if lost or misplaced.

Please note that change is not available from Ask I.T. Help Desks or from card dispensing machines, but a change machine is located in the Social Sciences and Humanities Library on Level 1.

Step 2: Printing the document

From a laptop

  • It is not possible to print directly to a library network printer from a laptop. You must save your document to either a USB drive or a floppy disk and then go to a library workstation or express print workstation to print your document.

From a library workstation

  1. Open the document that you wish to print, choose File from the menu bar, and then click on Print (or use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + P).

  2. A Print dialogue box will appear. Select the printer that you wish to use form the drop down menu of the Print dialogue box. For example, in the eZones of St Lucia Duhig Building, the closest printer will be \\LIB-NWPUBLIC\EZONE_PUBLIC_QUEUE. This is also the default printer for the workstations in the eZones, indicated by  a tick next to the printer icon.

  3. Click on OK to send the print job to the printer.

Step 3: Collecting your print job

To retrieve your document from the printer:

  1. Note down your workstation's ID number. This is located on your computer monitor. It will be in this format: EZN480, for example.
  2. Go to the network printer. (A librarian will advise you on where your closest printer is located.)
  3. Tap your Student ID/Print card on the reader located next to the printer.
Each A4 sheet costs 12 cents (including GST). You require the full amount of money of the print on your card before you can start the pring job. For example, if your print job has 8 pages, then you would require at least 96 cents on your card to begin with.
  4. On the computer screen, next to the card reader and printer, click on the Refresh button at the lower right hand side of the screen to refresh the job queue. The screen will then display a refreshed list of workstation ID numbers relating to each print job.
